Engineers Hand-Colored Mars' First Photo With Art Pastels

Too impatient to wait for computers, NASA engineers bought pastels from an art store and hand-colored the first close-up photo of Mars using printed numbers.

Their accidental color choices perfectly matched Mars' real hues.
