Italy's Sara Curtis just became the fastest woman in history at the 50-meter backstroke, smashing a three-year-old world record by nearly a quarter of a second.

The 19-year-old University of Virginia swimmer clocked an astonishing 26.

63 seconds at the European Championships in Paris, breaking the monopoly that just two swimmers had held on backstroke records for nearly eight years.
