New Typhoon-Proof School Rises in Northern Marianas

After Super Typhoon Sinlaku destroyed 22 classrooms this spring, kids in Saipan are getting something better—a school built to survive the strongest storms nature can throw at it.

Construction crews just poured the foundation for classrooms engineered to withstand 194 mph winds.
