7-Year-Old Lane Patrick Rings Bell After Beating Cancer

At just 7 years old, Lane Patrick grabbed a bell rope at Brenner Children's Hospital and rang it with everything he had, marking the end of a cancer battle that started when he was barely old enough to tie his shoes.

Surrounded by family and friends on January 9, Lane celebrated the completion of 28 months of treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The colorful beads draped around his neck told the story of every chemotherapy session, bone marrow test, surgery, and procedure he endured since his diagnosis at age 5.

Lane was in kindergarten when doctors delivered the life-changing news. The diagnosis forced him to leave his classroom for homeschooling and step away from playing pee-wee football with the East Wilkes Cardinals, trading the football field for hospital rooms.

But even sidelined from the game he loved, Lane found ways to stay connected to football and inspire others. In September 2024, he was chosen as the honorary coin tosser at Wake Forest University's "Gold Rush" football game, an annual event raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer research at the very hospital where he received treatment.
