Single parents across Arkansas are getting a powerful boost toward achieving their educational dreams, thanks to the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund's inspiring commitment to breaking down barriers to higher education.

The organization is now accepting applications for its spring 2026 semester scholarships, offering both financial support and a comprehensive network of resources designed to help student parents succeed. Applications are open until February 1st at aspsf.org/scholarships, welcoming single mothers and fathers pursuing associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, or professional certificates.

The impact of this program continues to grow in remarkable ways. In 2025 alone, ASPSF awarded more than 1,300 scholarships totaling an impressive $1.9 million across 69 Arkansas counties and Bowie County, Texas. This represents a significant increase from the 832 scholarships totaling $1.2 million distributed in 2024, demonstrating the expanding reach and impact of this vital program.

Right here in Jefferson County, 24 single parents received scholarships totaling $33,800 in 2025. Among them is Herman McMurray III, an inspiring engineering major at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff whose story exemplifies the transformative power of educational opportunity.

"My goal is to become a highly skilled engineer who excels in both technical knowledge and practical application," McMurray shares enthusiastically. "I want to work on innovative projects that improve infrastructure and benefit communities. Ultimately, I want to give back to my community by creating job opportunities and mentoring young people interested in the trades." His vision of one day owning his own engineering firm or construction company shows how these scholarships plant seeds for future community leadership.

What makes ASPSF particularly special is its holistic approach to supporting student parents. Scholarship awards ranging from $400 to $1,600, based on enrolled credit hours, are sent directly to recipients. This flexibility allows parents to address their most pressing needs, whether that's rent, childcare, gas, utilities, or school supplies. The program recognizes that supporting the whole student means addressing real-life challenges that can derail educational goals.

Beyond financial assistance, ASPSF creates a nurturing support network that helps student parents stay motivated and on track. Dedicated staff and volunteers provide mentoring, career guidance, and confidence-building workshops that promote long-term success. The program welcomes applicants who have a high school diploma or GED but haven't yet earned a bachelor's degree.
