Origin Energy's massive Eraring battery energy storage system on New South Wales' Central Coast has officially begun commercial operations, and the excitement is absolutely electric.

The impressive first stage boasts 460 MW of power capacity with 1,770 MWh of storage, now actively contributing clean energy to the National Electricity Market. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the project was delivered on time and under budget—a testament to brilliant collaboration and careful planning.

"I'm excited to share that Origin's first large-scale battery at Eraring has commenced commercial operations," beamed Greg Jarvis, Origin's head of energy supply and operations. He celebrated the tremendous teamwork between Origin and their contractor partners Wärtsilä, Enerven, Jacobs, Lumea, and Transgrid, whose dedication brought this vision to life.

The momentum isn't stopping there! Origin has committed an additional $53.87 million to build the project's fourth stage, demonstrating strong confidence in battery technology's role in Australia's energy transformation. When all four stages are complete, the Eraring battery will reach an impressive 700 MW capacity with 3,160 MWh of storage—providing an average of 4.5 hours of reliable power storage.

This expansion will be particularly valuable during evening peak demand periods, ensuring families can cook dinner, children can do homework, and businesses can continue operations seamlessly, all while supporting grid stability and reliability.

The location itself tells an inspiring story of transformation. The battery sits at the site of the Eraring coal-fired power station, located about 130 kilometers north of Sydney. As this aging facility prepares for retirement in 2027 or 2029, the battery system ensures the site remains vital infrastructure—evolving from old energy to new, from pollution to clean power storage.

"When complete, Australia's largest power station site will host the nation's largest approved battery storage system," Jarvis explained proudly, highlighting how this transformation reinforces Eraring's critical role in Australia's energy system for decades ahead.

Origin Energy's vision extends far beyond Eraring. The company is ambitiously targeting up to 5 GW of renewables and energy storage by 2030, with exciting battery projects underway in Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.
