Australia just proved that its energy future is brighter than ever—literally. As a punishing heatwave pushed temperatures into the 40s Celsius across large parts of southern Australia this week, something remarkable happened: the electricity grid didn't break a sweat.

On Wednesday, when underlying demand surged to a record-breaking high of more than 40,000 megawatts, solar power rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion. At its peak, solar provided more than 60 percent of the power flowing through the National Electricity Market, which serves Australia's entire eastern seaboard. About two-thirds of that came from rooftop solar panels—the kind adorning more than one in three Australian homes.

The result? Spot prices remained stable, the Australian Energy Market Operator issued no emergency warnings, and the system hummed along smoothly. It was a historic moment that left energy experts impressed and optimistic.

"Hot summer days have long been a stress test for electricity systems," explained Geoff Eldridge, an electrical engineer who runs consultancy Global Power Energy. "This week's heat has again pushed demand toward record levels. Yet the system response has looked noticeably different. There were no emergency notices, no calls for reserves, and prices were largely stable through the middle of the day."

The contrast with the past is striking. During a similar heatwave in 2019, renewable energy never provided more than 26 percent of supply at any point. Coal and gas plants had to "run hard from morning until evening, with little respite" to keep the lights on. This week, combined with wind and hydropower, solar met as much as 76.6 percent of demand at certain points. Almost half of all supply over the entire 24-hour period came from renewable sources.

"The pounding sun was no longer a liability, but rather an asset," Eldridge noted. What once threatened blackouts now powers millions of homes and businesses.

Bruce Mountain from the Victoria Energy Policy Centre called the shift significant beyond measure. The explosive growth of solar power has essentially eliminated the risk of summer daytime blackouts caused by supply shortfalls. "I think summer peak daily production, other than in evening hours, has become a complete non-issue," Mountain said.
