Driver Rescues Two Toddlers From Busy Florida Highway

John Brittingham was driving on Florida's A1A highway Sunday when he spotted something that made his heart stop: two toddlers, no older than 2 years old, standing alone in the middle of the busy road.

He didn't hesitate. Brittingham stopped his car, jumped out, and sprinted into traffic with one hand raised to signal oncoming vehicles.

"I was terrified thinking of what could have happened to them," Brittingham told local news. "The rest of my life would have been ruined."

Video of the rescue shows Brittingham reaching the children in about six seconds, scooping them both up, and rushing them to safety. The girls couldn't speak clearly yet, only pointing and making sounds.

With the toddlers safe but unable to tell him where they lived, Brittingham began searching nearby homes. He found an Airbnb property and knocked, but no one answered.

Walking around the property, he noticed an open back gate. Inside, he found an elderly couple and a young woman who had no idea the children had wandered off.

"They immediately went into like, 'Oh my God, we're so sorry,'" Brittingham said. "And I was like, 'Yeah, I know, I'm just glad I could get them back to you. They were out in the road, and your gate was open.'"

Brittingham, who has five children and grandchildren of his own, chose not to call police. His only goal was reuniting the little girls with their family.
