Epic Bans Prize Wheel Gambling in Fortnite Games

Epic Games just made a move that puts player protection ahead of profits, banning gambling-style prize wheels from Fortnite's creator-made games.

The gaming giant announced on January 16th that starting January 20th, creators can no longer offer in-game transactions that influence prize wheels. That means no more paying V-Bucks (Fortnite's currency) for spins, luck boosts, or chances at random prizes.

The rule change came just days after Epic allowed creators to sell in-game items for the first time. One of Fortnite's most popular creator experiences, Steal The Brainrot, immediately added prize wheels where players could pay for spins to win items.

Players and parents quickly raised concerns about the gambling-like mechanics targeting young gamers. The backlash spread across social media, with one player tweeting they were "all set" with the new system after seeing kids drawn to the spinning wheels.

Epic's response was fast and decisive. Within days of the controversy, the company created a comprehensive ban on any transactions that directly or indirectly influence prize wheels.

The move shows Epic taking a different path than competitors like Roblox, which allows similar mechanics. Epic originally paid creators only through an engagement system precisely to avoid these kinds of concerns.

Epic's quick action demonstrates that major gaming companies can prioritize child safety over revenue. The company is still giving creators ways to earn money, they're just drawing clear lines around predatory practices.

Through 2026, creators keep 100 percent of revenue from allowed in-game transactions. That drops to 50 percent after, but it gives developers real earning potential without resorting to gambling mechanics.

The policy protects millions of young Fortnite players from spending money on randomized rewards while still supporting the creator economy Epic wants to build. It's proof that player protection and creator opportunities don't have to be at odds.
