EU and South America Sign Historic Free Trade Deal

After a quarter century of talks, the European Union and South America's Mercosur bloc signed a landmark free trade agreement in Paraguay on Saturday. The deal creates one of the planet's largest free trade zones, connecting more than 700 million people across two continents.

The agreement brings together the EU's 27 countries with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Together, these nations represent about 30% of the world's total economic output.

The pact will slash tariffs on more than 90% of goods traded between the regions, which currently amounts to roughly $129 billion annually. European exports like cars, wine, and cheese will find easier pathways to South American markets, while products including beef and soybeans will flow more freely to Europe.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrated the milestone alongside South American leaders in Asuncion. "This is how we create real prosperity, prosperity that is shared," she said, emphasizing that international trade benefits everyone involved.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a driving force behind the deal, called it historic and a victory for global cooperation. Although he couldn't attend the signing ceremony, his years of advocacy helped push the agreement across the finish line.

The deal still needs approval from the European Parliament and national legislatures before taking full effect. Five EU countries opposed the agreement, and some European farmers worry about competing with South American imports.
