Europe's Solar Power Hits Record High, Up 20% in Q2 2025

Europe just proved that sunshine and ambition make a powerful combination, with solar power hitting an all-time high this spring.

Solar generation across the European Union reached 98 terawatt-hours between April and June 2025, a 20% jump from the same period last year. That's enough clean energy to power tens of millions of homes without burning a single ounce of fossil fuel.

Renewables now provide 52% of Europe's electricity mix, maintaining the continent's position as a global leader in sustainable energy. The solar boom helped offset declines in hydropower, which had seen unusually high output the previous year and dropped 17% as conditions normalized.

The timing couldn't be better for household budgets. Higher solar and wind output contributed to lower electricity prices compared to the first quarter, even as demand remained steady across the continent.

Electric vehicles are amplifying the clean energy revolution. Over 720,000 EVs were sold across the EU during the same three months, representing nearly one in four new passenger cars purchased.

Nordic countries are leading the charge with eye-popping adoption rates. Sweden hit 62% EV market share, while Denmark reached 60%, Finland 54%, and the Netherlands 52%. That's more than double the adoption rate in the United States.
