India's Fashion Institute Quadruples PhD Seats, Adds Waivers

The National Institute of Fashion Technology is opening doors for the next generation of fashion researchers with a bold expansion of its PhD program.

Starting in 2026, NIFT will increase its teaching fellow positions from just five seats to 20 each year. The move creates opportunities for young academics who want to advance both their research careers and the fashion technology field.

But the institute didn't stop at expanding seats. NIFT announced it will cover 100% of tuition costs for five students from economically weaker sections, scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes who qualify as teaching fellows. Another 15 fellows will receive half their tuition covered, making advanced education financially feasible for scholars who might otherwise face barriers.

The institute set the maximum age at 30 for teaching fellow applicants, though other PhD candidates can apply at any age. This structure balances support for early career researchers while keeping the program open to lifelong learners.
