Jay Leno Honors 45-Year Marriage Vow Amid Wife's Dementia

The 75-year-old former Tonight Show host shared the surprising reaction during a podcast appearance with Maria Shriver. Leno has been married to Mavis, 79, since 1980, and he's not budging from her side now.

"You take a vow when you get married, and people are stunned," Leno said. "They're so shocked that you would live up to it."

One person actually asked if he planned to get a girlfriend now that Mavis has dementia. Leno's response was simple: "Well, no, I have a girlfriend. I'm married."

The comedian called it "the most Hollywood thing" and laughed off the suggestion. But his point cuts deeper than the absurdity of the question.

"We just make a big deal out of it," Leno explained. "You're just doing the right thing because you're supposed to."

He pointed out how backwards things have become. Staying committed used to be normal, and leaving was the shocking choice. Now it seems flipped.

In January 2024, Leno became conservator of Mavis' estate after doctors confirmed she has major neurocognitive disorders including dementia. The legal step protects her interests as her condition progresses.

Mavis is far from just a celebrity spouse. She earned a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2002 for her advocacy work supporting Afghan women under Taliban rule.

The couple met at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles in the 1970s and never had children. They've built a life together spanning more than four decades.
