The remote Northern Territory town of Katherine has achieved something remarkable. After nearly a decade of hard work and determination, this outback community has transformed its contaminated water supply into the best tasting tap water in all of Australia.

Katherine took home the top prize at the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia competition late last year, beating samples from every Australian state in a blind taste test. Expert judges evaluated color, clarity, odor, and taste, and Katherine's water came out on top. It's a stunning achievement that represents the culmination of years of dedication, innovation, and community resilience.

The journey to this victory began in 2016 when residents discovered their groundwater had been contaminated with PFAS, toxic forever chemicals from firefighting foam used at the nearby Tindal Air Force Base. These chemicals had leached into the Katherine River and underground aquifer, affecting the town's drinking water supply.

Rather than accepting defeat, the community rallied. The Australian Department of Defence stepped up, providing clean water to affected properties and funding a permanent PFAS decontamination plant at the local Power and Water Corporation treatment facility. After years of development, the cutting-edge plant began operation last year, using innovative ion exchange resin technology to remove the harmful chemicals.

Dan McIvor, senior field supervisor for Katherine Water Services, credits not just the "mammoth" effort by his team, but also a secret weapon: Katherine Gorge. "Everybody knows how beautiful that place is," he said proudly.

Dr. Stuart Khan, head of civil engineering at the University of Sydney, explains that Katherine's award-winning taste comes from its unique "designer" water blend. Most of the supply flows as rainwater through the stunning Jawoyn country landmark of Nitmiluk, also known as Katherine Gorge. This naturally soft water is then balanced with small amounts of mineral-rich groundwater from the Tindal Limestone Aquifer, which also feeds the striking electric-blue springs at nearby Mataranka.

"A really good tasting water supply has just the right balance," Dr. Khan explained. The combination of low-mineral river water with harder groundwater creates the perfect mix.

The Ripple Effect: Katherine's success story is now inspiring other Australian communities facing PFAS contamination. Areas like the Blue Mountains are learning from Katherine's pioneering solutions and innovative treatment methods. When Katherine became one of the first Australian towns to discover PFAS in its water supply in 2016, the technology to treat it was still in its infancy. The town became a testing ground for new commercial solutions that are now helping communities nationwide.
