Students collaborating in bright modern Innovation Space with colorful modular furniture and large windows

Miami Middle School Gets $2M Innovation Space Makeover

😊 Feel Good

Rockway Middle School just unveiled a cutting-edge Innovation Space where 1,200 students can collaborate, create, and explore with interactive technology. The transformation turns a traditional library into a 21st-century learning hub complete with robotics, modular furniture, and an interactive floor.

Middle schoolers in Miami just got a serious upgrade to their learning environment, and it's the kind of space that makes former students wish they could go back.

Rockway Middle School in Cutler Bay unveiled its newly redesigned Innovation Space, transforming their media center into a technology-rich collaboration hub. The space now features an interactive floor, comfortable modular furniture, and a dedicated Makerspace area where students can dive into robotics, arts and crafts, and hands-on technology projects.

The redesign goes beyond just cool tech. Large new windows flood the space with natural light, while soft seating areas give students places to relax between classes or dive into group projects.

Flip-and-nest tables can quickly shift from traditional classroom setup to wide-open collaboration space. High-top tables accommodate students working on laptops, whether they're studying or unwinding with games.

"I love how school has evolved, making this space amazing," said Alain Morera, a Rockway alumnus whose two daughters now attend the school. "I wish we had this when we were growing up, to open our eyes and to give us the opportunity to explore new things."

Eighth-grader Michael Marrero noticed the transformation immediately. "Everything is changed now, and the lights and the new colors make it bright, vibrant and eye-catching, a major change for Rockway," he said.

Principal Ruben Morales explained the philosophy behind the redesign: "What's great about this new furniture at our new Innovation Space is that it adapts to what the students need to make them feel comfortable while they are here."

The Ripple Effect

Rockway's Innovation Space is just the first wave. A $2 million partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the College Football Playoff Foundation, the 2026 Miami Host Committee, and the Orange Bowl Committee is creating 18 Innovation Spaces across middle schools over two years.

That means thousands of Miami-Dade middle schoolers will soon have access to flexible, technology-rich environments designed to spark creativity and collaboration. The initiative recognizes that learning spaces shape how students think, work together, and imagine their futures.

Chief Academic Officer Lourdes Diaz summed up the vision at the ribbon-cutting ceremony: "Taking what you have and making it what you need it to be is what we hope this space will provide for each and every one of you."

Seventeen more schools are about to discover what Rockway students already know: the future of learning looks pretty bright.
