Nigerian Widows Get $100K in Interest-Free Business Loans
Ondo State just gave 100+ military widows up to $1,000 each in zero-interest loans to start businesses. The program more than doubled loan amounts from last year and keeps growing.
Over 100 widows of fallen soldiers in Nigeria just received real tools to rebuild their lives through business.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State handed out 50 million naira (approximately $100,000) in completely interest-free loans during Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15. Each widow received between 450,000 and 500,000 naira to start or grow their own businesses.
The ceremony took place at the Cenotaph in Akure, the state capital. These women became sole breadwinners overnight when their husbands died serving their country.
This marks the second year of the program, and it's already expanding fast. Last year, widows received just 200,000 naira each. This year's loans are more than double that amount, and the total fund increased to reach even more families.
"This is our own little way of supporting their businesses to enable them take care of the families left behind," Aiyedatiwa said at the ceremony. He personally contributed 5 million naira to launch the emblem appeal fund.

The program runs as a revolving fund. When widows repay their loans, that money goes to help the next group of women waiting for support. The governor stressed that timely repayments will keep the program alive for years to come.
The Ripple Effect
What makes this powerful goes beyond the immediate financial help. By investing in businesses rather than one-time handouts, Ondo State is creating lasting economic independence for families who lost everything.
Each successful business means children stay in school, medical bills get paid, and entire households gain stability. When one woman builds a thriving business, she often employs others in her community, creating jobs where they're desperately needed.
Dr. Seun Osamaye, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, confirmed the state's commitment to continuing this support. The government designed the program to grow each year, accommodating more widows as funding allows.
Ondo State has earned recognition as one of Nigeria's safest and most peaceful states. The governor promised continued support for security agencies, acknowledging that the sacrifice of fallen heroes made that peace possible.
These widows are turning grief into opportunity, one business at a time.
