In a heartwarming tribute to nature and dedication, scientists from the University of Delhi have unveiled two stunning new frog species from the pristine mountain habitats of Arunachal Pradesh. The discovery represents years of patient exploration and a touching honor to a journalist who devoted his life to environmental storytelling.

The research, published in the respected peer-reviewed journal PeerJ, showcases the remarkable biodiversity still waiting to be discovered in India's northeastern frontier. Led by renowned herpetologist Professor S.D. Biju, along with his doctoral student A.N. Dikshit Akalabya Sarmah, the team spent more than three years conducting intensive field expeditions to some of the most isolated regions of Arunachal Pradesh.

During their surveys across five northeastern states, the researchers encountered multiple populations of slender-armed frogs, meticulously documenting and studying each one. Their dedication paid off when detailed laboratory analyses confirmed they had found two species entirely new to science.

The first species, Soman's Slender Arm Frog, carries a deeply meaningful name. The small amphibian, measuring about 55 millimeters in length, honors the late journalist E. Somanath, who shared Professor Biju's passion for discovering frogs and regularly accompanied him on field expeditions. This beautiful creature features a greyish-brown body decorated with irregular light-grey markings and captivating silver-grey to light-blue eyes. Found at Tiwarigaon in Arunachal Pradesh, these charming frogs make their homes in evergreen forests, with males calling from the banks of forest streams.

The second discovery, the Mechuka Slender Arm Frog, was first found near the town of Mechuka. Slightly larger at around 60 millimeters, this species displays a uniformly brown body with a reddish tinge and distinctive silvery-white eyes. These frogs thrive in both evergreen forests and adjoining grasslands, adapting beautifully to their mountain home.

The research team employed cutting-edge scientific techniques to confirm their discoveries, combining DNA analysis, detailed morphological comparisons of adults and tadpoles, bioacoustic studies, and even three-dimensional micro-CT scans of the frogs' skeletons. This integrative approach ensured the evolutionary distinctiveness of these new species was thoroughly established.

The Ripple Effect: This discovery illuminates the crucial role of geographic features in shaping biodiversity. The research revealed that the mighty Brahmaputra river acts as a major biogeographical barrier, with both new species found exclusively on the northern side while other related frogs live south of it. This insight helps scientists understand how river systems influence the distribution and evolution of species over time.

Arunachal Pradesh sits within the Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, one of Earth's most biologically rich regions. The area harbors exceptional plant and animal diversity found nowhere else on the planet. Among its treasures are members of the Megophryidae family, one of the world's most diverse frog families with 366 recognized species. The slender-armed frogs belong to this remarkable family, which now comprises around 40 known species thanks to discoveries like these.
