When 12-year-old vision impaired runner Tamahau Hicks nearly had to drop out of his 1500m race, record-breaking 16-year-old Sam Ruthe stepped in as his guide. Together, they crossed the finish line with a personal best that shaved 40 seconds off Tamahau's previous time.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments in sports aren't about breaking records or standing on podiums. Sometimes they're about one athlete helping another achieve something they thought might be impossible.

That's exactly what happened at the Colgate Games in Tauranga, New Zealand, when teen running sensation Sam Ruthe volunteered to guide 12-year-old vision impaired runner Tamahau Hicks through a 1500 meter race. Just 30 minutes before the starting gun, Tamahau's regular guide had fallen ill, putting his entire race in jeopardy. Without someone to act as his eyes on the track, the young athlete wouldn't be able to safely navigate the course.

Enter Ruthe, who just days earlier on January 4 had become the fastest 16-year-old ever to run 1000 meters. When Athletics Tauranga reached out to see if he could help, the record-smashing runner didn't hesitate to say yes.

Tamahau's mother, Emily Kay, said her son was absolutely thrilled when he learned who his guide would be. Running on a marked track presents unique challenges for Tamahau, who has to concentrate intensely on staying in his lane, making the physical effort even more demanding. "He has to really concentrate on staying in his lane, which makes it quite taxing when you're trying to run," Kay explained.

Before the race, Tamahau shared his goal with Ruthe: he wanted to finish in under six minutes. The experienced runner took that ambition to heart and crafted a race strategy on the spot. "Sam pretty much said to him, we're gonna not go too fast for the first two and a half laps, and in the last lap, we're just gonna gun it," Kay recalled.

Tamahau told his mom that during the race, he simply followed Ruthe's lead in every way. "He said, I copied his arms, I copied his legs, I copied his pace." The approach worked beautifully. When they crossed the finish line together, the clock showed 5 minutes and 57 seconds, a stunning 40-second improvement over Tamahau's previous personal best.

The achievement means even more when you understand Tamahau's journey. Two years ago, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that impacted his vision, spatial awareness, and coordination. Doctors advised him to stop playing rugby due to his worsening vision, so he turned to running. Since then, he's completed over 50 marathon and half-marathon events, placing third in the Taupō 10km race last year and winning several other competitions.

Sunny's Take

What makes this story shine so brightly is the generosity of spirit on display. Sam Ruthe holds nearly every national record for distances between 800 and 5000 meters in his age groups. He could have spent that race day focused solely on his own performance. Instead, he chose to use his extraordinary talent to help a fellow runner achieve something special.

Kay said Saturday became her son's personal highlight in his running career so far, a memory made possible by one teenager's willingness to be someone else's eyes and encouragement when it mattered most. In a world that often celebrates individual achievement above all else, here were two runners showing us that sometimes the greatest victories are the ones we help others achieve.
