Tennis Star Kasatkina Finds Home and Hope in Australia

Russian-born tennis player Daria Kasatkina says she can finally live without fear after gaining Australian citizenship just in time for the Australian Open.

The world number 48 hasn't returned to Russia since 2022, when she publicly came out as gay and called the invasion of Ukraine a "nightmare." Same-sex relationships face severe stigma and legal restrictions in Russia, making it unsafe for her to go home.

For three years, Kasatkina played as a neutral athlete with no country to represent. She described 2024 as "very, very tough," saying she was "trying to get out of this hole" and felt at "breaking point" mentally and emotionally.

Now she's preparing for something completely different. On Sunday, she'll walk onto the court at Melbourne Park as Australia's number two player, competing in front of thousands of home fans for the first time in her career.

"Finally I can just breathe," Kasatkina said. "I can live and just do my job and not be worried about the things which are not in my control."

The 28-year-old former world number eight will face Czech teenager Nikola Bartunkova in the first round. She admits she'll need to manage her nerves in this entirely new situation.
