Texas College Powers Regional Workforce Through Trade Skills
South Texas College is turning students into skilled workers in months, not years, filling urgent job gaps in manufacturing, construction, and public safety. Their career training programs are creating pathways to high-paying careers while strengthening the entire Rio Grande Valley economy.
Students at South Texas College are landing stable, well-paying careers faster than ever thanks to hands-on training programs designed around what employers actually need right now.
As Career and Technical Education Month wrapped up in February, the college celebrated how its programs are transforming lives across the Rio Grande Valley. From advanced manufacturing to automotive technology, construction trades to public safety, students gain real skills that translate directly into job offers.
"If you simply drive around the RGV and look at the growth we've experienced, it's clear there are jobs that need to be filled," said Jose Vela, interim dean for the Division of Business, Public Safety and Technology. "CTE provides a direct pathway for students to move into high-paying careers in a relatively short amount of time."
The programs serve everyone from recent high school graduates to working adults looking to switch careers or level up their skills. The training is affordable and focused, getting people into the workforce quickly without the time and expense of a traditional four-year degree.
What makes South Texas College's approach different is their tight connection with local businesses. Employers serve on advisory committees that meet each semester, providing direct input on what skills students need to learn and what equipment they should train on.

"I believe the college should always be a few steps ahead of industry," Vela said. "When employers begin asking for specific skill sets, our students already have them."
The Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships takes this partnership even further. Students in registered apprenticeship programs earn money while they learn, applying classroom lessons on actual job sites the same day.
The Ripple Effect
The impact reaches far beyond individual paychecks. When someone lands a stable career, their entire family benefits from the financial security. As more skilled workers enter the local economy, businesses can expand and new companies choose to move to the region.
Advanced manufacturing faculty member Alberto Farias sees the broader picture daily. "This attracts new businesses, encourages existing companies to expand and helps the region compete in a global economy," he said.
For Farias, the most rewarding moments come from watching students transform. They arrive uncertain about technical concepts and leave confident professionals ready to solve real problems. That confidence translates into economic mobility and opportunities their families might never have imagined.
The Rio Grande Valley's growth creates constant demand for skilled workers, and South Texas College keeps delivering graduates ready to meet that need.
