Tour de France Opens in Britain for Men and Women in 2027
For the first time ever, both the men's and women's Tour de France will start in the same country outside France. Britain will host the opening stages in 2027, with routes through Scotland, England, and Wales drawing on the nation's passionate cycling culture.
The world's most famous cycling race is returning to Britain, and this time it's bringing both tours with it.
In 2027, both the men's and women's Tour de France will kick off in the United Kingdom for the first time in the race's history. The men's race begins July 2 in Edinburgh, Scotland, while the women's race starts July 30 in Leeds, England.
The men's opening stage winds through Midlothian and the Scottish borders before finishing at Carlisle's medieval castle. Day two takes riders through the stunning Lake District National Park to Liverpool, home of The Beatles. The third stage ventures into Wales, passing through picturesque valleys before ending in Cardiff.
British fans have always rolled out the welcome mat for the Tour. The 2014 race started in Yorkshire and drew massive crowds. The 2007 London start was equally electric.
"The UK has always welcomed the Tour with passion and pride, and the route details we are revealing today reflect the beauty and diversity of Britain's terrain," said Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme.

The women's race showcases England's northern beauty, starting in Leeds and crossing the Pennines to Manchester. Day two takes riders through Peak District National Park and over the challenging Snake Pass climb to Sheffield. The final UK stage finishes with a Sunday showcase in London on August 1.
"These stages clearly reflect the race's ambition: to continue growing women's cycling and to inspire future generations," said women's Tour director Marion Rousse.
The Ripple Effect
The 2027 Grand Départ brings more than just world-class cycling to Britain. Organizers launched an initiative called "Joy" that tackles inactivity, improves mental wellbeing, and helps communities thrive. The program works with governments and local councils to create opportunities for young people and break down barriers for girls in sports.
British Cycling aims to recruit more than 7,000 volunteers for the event. That's 7,000 people getting involved, building skills, and connecting with their communities through the power of sport.
The races will showcase Britain's dramatic landscapes to a global audience while inspiring the next generation of cyclists right at home.
