UAE Awards $2M to 4 Agri-Tech Startups Fighting Hunger
Four innovative food technology companies from around the world just won $2 million to scale solutions that could transform how we grow, preserve, and protect food in climate-stressed regions. The winners emerged from over 1,200 submissions spanning 113 countries.
Four groundbreaking startups are about to change how the world tackles food security, and they're bringing solutions that could help millions of farmers feed their communities more efficiently.
The UAE FoodTech Challenge just wrapped up at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, announcing winners who beat out 1,215 competitors from 113 countries. These aren't just ideas on paper. They're proven technologies ready to scale across regions where climate change threatens food supplies most.
Permia Sensing uses artificial intelligence and bioacoustic sensors to listen to trees and detect stress before farmers can see it. Already monitoring over 15,000 hectares of palm plantations in Sri Lanka, the technology catches dehydration and pest problems early, helping farmers boost yields and cut waste.
HyveGeo transforms agricultural waste into enriched biochar that supercharges soil health. Akorn Technology developed an edible coating made from vegetable protein, wax, and oil that keeps produce fresh longer on store shelves and in home kitchens.
Flybox takes a different approach by using black soldier fly larvae to turn farm byproducts into high-quality protein and fertilizer. The process diverts massive amounts of waste from landfills while creating valuable resources.

The $2 million prize is just the beginning. Winners get access to pilot opportunities, research facilities, mentorship, and investor networks throughout the UAE and beyond.
The Ripple Effect
Past winners from previous challenges have raised over $48 million in follow-up funding and launched more than 50 pilot projects. These aren't just feel-good experiments. They're real businesses solving real problems for farmers and communities.
The UAE deliberately designed this program to identify solutions that work in hot, arid climates where traditional agriculture struggles. These technologies get refined in the Emirates, then deployed across the Global South where food insecurity hits hardest.
Rima Al Mokarrab, Chair of Tamkeen and Co-Chair of the challenge, emphasized that resilient food systems anchor the UAE's vision for long-term prosperity. Fatema Almulla from the UAE Presidential Court explained how the program connects advanced technology with policy leadership to accelerate solutions from pilot stage to global scale.
The timing couldn't be more critical. Climate stress is intensifying across agricultural regions worldwide, threatening food supplies for vulnerable populations.
These four winners are now embedded in a proven development ecosystem where innovation becomes measurable impact, proving that the next generation of food security solutions is already here and growing fast.
