The team studied floating solar panels on water bodies and found something remarkable. When the panels track the sun's movement across the sky throughout the day, they produce 26% more electricity than panels that stay in one position.

The technology is surprisingly simple. Think of solar panels on a turntable that slowly rotates to keep facing the sun. This "azimuthal tracking" follows the same principle young sunflowers use to maximize their growth.

Study author Aritra Ghosh called the results unexpectedly competitive, especially for a country with less sunshine than many others. The findings suggest floating solar could become a major player alongside wind power in the UK's renewable energy mix.

Floating solar panels come with bonus benefits beyond the energy boost. They don't require any land, making them perfect for countries where space is precious. The panels also reduce water evaporation from the reservoirs where they float.

Installation planners can choose remote water bodies where few people will see them, avoiding the visual impact complaints that sometimes face wind turbines. Better yet, many of these reservoirs already sit near existing electrical grid connections.

The UK currently gets just over 6% of its electricity from solar power, while wind provides nearly 30%. But thousands of reservoirs and lagoons across the country remain completely unused for energy generation.

Many of these water bodies sit on private or industrial land, ready and waiting for floating solar installations. With tracking technology now proven to boost output by more than a quarter, these overlooked spaces could become powerhouses of clean energy.
