UK Sets Renewable Energy Record With Wind and Solar in 2025

Britain just set a major renewable energy record that shows clean power is rapidly taking over the grid.

The UK generated more than 127 terawatt hours of renewable electricity in 2025, according to new figures from the National Energy System Operator. Wind energy led the charge, producing 85 terawatt hours and accounting for nearly 30% of all electricity generated across Great Britain.

Solar power delivered an even bigger surprise. Panels generated over 18 terawatt hours in 2025, tripling their output from just the year before. During the UK's hottest summer on record, solar panels met up to 40% of energy demand during peak afternoon hours in July.

A decade ago, solar contributed no more than 5% during peak times. The jump came from both massive new solar farms, like the one at Cleve Hill in Kent, and 250,000 small rooftop installations added by homeowners and businesses.

The renewable energy boom puts Britain on stronger footing to meet its ambitious 2030 target for emission-free electricity. The country aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050, making the shift away from fossil fuels essential in the fight against climate change.

These record numbers prove that renewable energy technology is working at scale. What once seemed like a distant dream is now powering millions of homes and businesses every single day.

The growth shows momentum building in the right direction. More solar farms are coming online, wind turbines are spinning faster, and a quarter million families chose to install rooftop panels in just one year.

Meeting the 2030 clean energy goal will require continued investment in both generation and storage systems to capture excess renewable power. The infrastructure upgrades mean higher energy bills in the short term, but they're building the foundation for a cleaner, more sustainable energy system that will serve future generations.
