Walmart Drone Delivery Expanding to 270 Stores by 2027

Your online order arriving by drone in minutes instead of hours could soon become normal at hundreds of Walmart stores across America.

Wing, the drone delivery company owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, announced it's expanding to 150 additional Walmart locations in 2026. The service will launch in four new major cities: Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.

This marks a massive leap from small-scale experiments to real-world service. Wing currently operates at about 27 Walmart stores in Dallas-Fort Worth, Arkansas, and parts of Atlanta. The company had already announced plans to reach 100 stores last year in cities like Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa.

The expansion puts Wing on track to serve 270 Walmart locations by 2027. That's ten times their current reach in just two years.

How it works is surprisingly simple. Customers order items online, and Wing's electric drones fly the package directly to their home. The drones hover overhead and gently lower packages on a tether, handling items up to 5 pounds with their newer models.

The Ripple Effect

The environmental impact could be significant. Fewer delivery trucks making multiple stops means fewer emissions from last-mile deliveries, which are often the most polluting part of shipping. Electric drones use a fraction of the energy of gas-powered vans making door-to-door runs.

Customers are responding enthusiastically. Wing reports that their top 25% of customers order three times per week, and overall deliveries have tripled in the last six months. That kind of repeat usage suggests people aren't just trying it for novelty but actually finding it useful.

The technology is also getting better. Wing's newest drones can carry twice the weight of earlier models, opening up more product possibilities beyond just small household items.
