Getting Nicole home to Canada was itself a testament to the power of community and friendship. Her close friend Rod Ponkin became her guardian angel, working tirelessly to secure a hospital bed when government support wasn't available for her situation. He paid over $80,000 for a private air ambulance and spent weeks calling nearly every hospital in Ontario until Niagara Health opened their doors.

On October 29, Nicole finally touched down on Canadian soil. "I thought I was still in a dream," she recalls of that emotional moment.

In mid-November, she underwent successful surgery—and even received unexpected good news when doctors discovered the damage wasn't as extensive as initially feared. "That was a blessing," Ponkin noted, calling his friend "a true miracle."

Now at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. Catharines, Nicole is relearning life's simple pleasures with inspiring determination. Tasks that once seemed impossible are becoming achievable milestones. She's mastered brushing her teeth, gotten better at texting, and is working on her mobility.

Yes, she admits to moments of frustration—dropped items, messy attempts at daily tasks—but she approaches each challenge with humor and grace. "It's just going to be the new way of my life," she says with characteristic optimism.
