Sarah describes turning 50 as a celebration—not just of reaching a milestone birthday, but of surviving, healing, and completely transforming her life into something she genuinely loves.

Her journey wasn't easy. Eight years before that landmark birthday, Sarah's life was unraveling. She was going through a divorce, working exhausting hours in politics, and struggling with disordered eating and daily drinking. When alcohol shifted from being a stress relief to a necessity, she knew something had to change.

"I had no idea who I was," Sarah reflects. "But I had to work that out on my own."

The path to sobriety was challenging, with setbacks along the way. But Sarah persevered, committing to four years of recovery and attending support groups regularly. She courageously faced the trauma and issues she'd been avoiding, choosing healing over hiding.

"Committing to healing has been a difficult but beautiful experience," she shares. "I've learnt to be with myself without anaesthetizing myself."

A pivotal moment came at a friend's wedding in 2024. Having recently lost her government job, Sarah asked about alcohol-free drink options and was disappointed to hear only water and lemonade were available. That frustration sparked inspiration—why not create enticing mocktail experiences for sober and sober-curious people?

Sarah jumped in with both feet, enrolling in a women's mentoring program and a business qualification. Though initially overwhelmed by everything she needed to learn about accounting, websites, and legislation, she embraced the challenge. "So many people were ready to help me by sharing their business and marketing nous," she says gratefully.

One year later, her mocktail workshop and event catering business is thriving. She works from her kitchen table, with her son's old bedroom serving as her stockroom. She's also added voice-over work and gardening to her repertoire.

"I feel completely different to the person I was in my 40s," Sarah explains. "Having done an extensive amount of inner work, I'm calmer and content."

Now 50, Sarah assesses her choices based on whether they align with who she truly is and who she wants to be. She's comfortable with ambiguity as she continues discovering herself.

Rather than viewing aging negatively, Sarah sees this stage of life as precious. "I refuse to concede to the narrative that 'all is woe' as you get older. I am grateful to have been given a second chance, and I am seizing the opportunity."

The best part? Her relationship with her children—now 16 and 22—has blossomed. They genuinely want to spend time with her. She's teaching her youngest to drive and has become her own best friend.

"The past decade has been incredibly difficult, but it's been well worth it," Sarah concludes. "I finally feel I've come into my full self."

Her story is a powerful reminder that transformation is possible at any age, and that our greatest challenges can lead us to our most authentic, joyful lives.
