1 Million UK Runners Apply for 2027 London Marathon

Running fever has swept the United Kingdom like never before, with one out of every 55 adults applying to lace up their shoes for the 2027 London Marathon.

The race shattered global records with 1,338,544 total applications from 200 countries, up from 1.13 million for this year's event. For the first time ever, organizers received more than one million entries from UK runners alone.

"This astonishing total firmly establishes London as the world's most sought-after marathon," said London Marathon CEO Hugh Brasher. "Nothing else comes close."

The numbers reveal a fascinating shift in who's running. Women aged 20-29 submitted the largest number of applications, with more than 179,000 entries from that age group alone, showing that Generation Z has fully embraced the running boom.

Overall, female and male applicants reached near parity. This balance reflects running's transformation from a niche sport into a mainstream movement that welcomes everyone.

The ballot results arrive in early July through a random draw. Only about 20,000 people typically win spots through the lottery, meaning most hopeful runners will need to find alternative paths like charity fundraising.

But there's hope on the horizon. Organizers are awaiting approval by the end of May to stage the first ever two-day London Marathon in 2027, which would nearly double participation to about 100,000 runners.

The Ripple Effect

The London Marathon's growth mirrors a broader cultural shift toward health and community. The 2026 race drew 59,830 finishers and became the world's biggest annual one-day fundraising event, channeling millions toward worthy causes.

That same year made history when Kenya's Sabastian Sawe broke the two-hour marathon barrier with a time of 1:59:30, while Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa set a women's world record without male pacemakers. These breakthrough moments inspired countless people to believe that their own impossible goals might be within reach.
