10 Nigerian Students to Meet Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka

🦸 Hero Alert

Ten secondary school students from Ogun State, Nigeria, will meet Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka for mentorship after winning spots in a national essay competition. The finalists will participate in an interactive session designed to inspire the next generation of African writers and leaders.

Ten talented young writers from Ogun State are about to experience a moment that could shape their futures forever.

The students emerged as finalists in the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) national essay competition, earning them a rare opportunity to meet and learn directly from Africa's first Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Professor Wole Soyinka, who turns 92 this year, will personally mentor the group during the exchange program's 17th edition on July 15.

The finalists include students from schools across Ogun State, from Ota to Ijebu-Ode. Faparusi Tioluwani from The Ambassadors School, Oseni Tolulope Nurudeen and Olusanwo Precious Semilore from Iganmode Grammar School, and Adedokun Elemide Hilmoh from Adedokun International Schools made the cut. Aina Oluwadarasimi, Adegbola Mujibat, Iheme Praise Chinenye, Oladipo Nasir Ahmad, and Akinnawonu G. Oluwabukunmi round out the accomplished group.

During the mentorship session, the students won't just sit and listen. They'll engage in a question-and-answer dialogue with Professor Soyinka focused on critical thinking, creativity, leadership, and cultural awareness. The event is part of the "Do Your Own Thing" program, one of this year's flagship activities.

The Ripple Effect

This competition does more than crown winners. It creates a pipeline of young African voices committed to excellence in writing and civic responsibility, values Professor Soyinka has championed throughout his celebrated career.

Linda Amadi-Olowookere, producer of the youth program, calls the interaction with the Nobel laureate one of the most anticipated aspects of the annual exchange. She notes that students get to engage with literary greatness in an environment built entirely around learning and inspiration.

The Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange has grown into one of Africa's leading cultural and educational platforms since its founding. It brings together young people through literature, arts, civic engagement, and intercultural dialogue, proving that investing in young writers today creates the thought leaders of tomorrow.

The top three winners from Ogun State will be announced alongside winners from other participating states during the WS@92 celebration, marking another year of nurturing Africa's brightest young minds.
