100 Black Fathers March Through Omaha for Fatherhood

When 100 Black fathers marched down 30th Street in North Omaha, they weren't just walking together. They were making a statement that too often goes unheard: Black fathers are present, engaged and deserve recognition.

Children walked alongside their dads from Lake Street to Sprague Street, their chants echoing through the neighborhood. The march celebrated the men who show up every day to lead their families and strengthen their community.

Event organizer Leo Louis wanted to shine a spotlight on the Black fathers who rarely get acknowledged for their dedication. "It's definitely important for our community to see the presence of Black fathers," Louis explained. "Oftentimes, those fathers are not acknowledged, and they're not visible to the public, so we wanted to make sure they're visible to the public."

The march welcomed everyone but had a clear mission: to recognize Black fathers specifically. Louis explained that the focus wasn't about exclusion but about ensuring these fathers receive the recognition they deserve.

Pastor Cedric L. Perkins emphasized why visibility matters now more than ever. "It helps the community help us understand that men are important, especially in this day and time, Black fathers are important," he said.

Beyond the matching shirts and hats, the march created something deeper. It built unity among fathers who understand the weight of their role and the joy that comes with it.

The Ripple Effect

After the march, fathers gathered for a panel discussion about the real challenges they face. They talked about supporting each other as parents, mentors and community leaders who shape the next generation.

The event did more than celebrate current fathers. Organizers hope it inspires more men to embrace fatherhood and reminds the entire community of the positive impact engaged fathers create every single day.

For the children who marched beside their fathers, the message was clear: your dad matters, his presence makes a difference, and the world is better because he chose to show up.
