100+ Lagos Students Compete in New Tennis Championship

When 100 student athletes walked onto the courts at Lagos's Mainland Tennis Club this week, they weren't just playing a game. They were stepping into Nigeria's newest pathway to Olympic glory.

The maiden Nigeria Tennis Live Lagos Secondary Schools Championship launched Thursday with competitors from 50 schools across the state. The three-day event marks the first major tournament designed specifically for Nigeria's young tennis players who previously had limited opportunities to compete.

Tournament Director Damilare Okunola saw a problem and built a solution. "We discovered there is a depth of talent among junior players, but not enough tournaments for them to participate in," he explained at the opening matches.

The competitive spirit showed immediately. Early rounds saw tight matches like Oluwatishe Ogungbade defeating Desmond Sikiru 4-1, 4-2, and Daniel Israel beating Godwin Fortune 4-1, 4-0.

The Ripple Effect

This tournament represents more than weekend competition. Okunola's vision extends all the way to future Olympic teams.

"In the next two Olympics, we could have players competing if we start building now," he said. By creating regular competitive opportunities for young athletes, the championship fills a crucial gap in Nigeria's sports development.

Coach Itandayo Adekale from Corona School praised how the event helps players understand their true competitive level. "My aim is for my players to develop and become more competitive in future competitions," he noted, adding that students now clearly see their strengths and areas for growth.

Parent Yvonne Ogunoiki emphasized the importance of exposure beyond school walls. "They train consistently, and this tournament allows them to face different opponents, test their abilities, and grow," she shared.

The impressive turnout confirmed what organizers hoped: Nigeria has hungry young talent waiting for their chance. Schools responded enthusiastically to the opportunity, with participation exceeding expectations despite minor challenges like some late arrivals.

The smooth execution, helped by favorable weather, has already set the stage for future editions. Okunola thanked Corona Secondary School for their support and expressed confidence in expanding the program.

Beyond trophies and match scores, this championship is building something lasting: a generation of confident, competitive tennis players who believe they belong on the world stage.
