A Nigerian nonprofit just removed financial barriers for 1,000 expectant mothers in Enugu State, ensuring they can access prenatal care and deliver their babies without cost. The move comes as the region celebrates dropping malaria rates from 24.5% to just 9%.

Pregnancy should be a time of hope, not financial stress over whether you can afford proper care.

The Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme announced Thursday it will cover health insurance premiums for 1,000 pregnant women in Enugu State, Nigeria. The women will receive free antenatal care and hospital deliveries through the state's universal health coverage agency.

Dr. Andy Eyo, the organization's CEO, said the initiative tackles one of the biggest obstacles preventing mothers from getting care. "These women will have their premiums paid, allowing them to receive antenatal care and deliver free of charge at hospitals," he explained during World Malaria Day commemorations.

The timing matters. Malaria poses serious risks to pregnant women and their babies, and Enugu has made remarkable progress fighting the disease. The state's malaria rate dropped from 24.5% to 9%, well below Nigeria's national average of 15.2%.

Health Commissioner Prof. George Ugwu credits free testing and treatment at 527 facilities across the state for the improvement. "We are providing free malaria testing and treatment in public facilities, primary healthcare centers, and selected private facilities," he said.

The insurance program ensures new mothers can participate in Malaria in Pregnancy services, which protect both mother and child during this vulnerable time. Nigeria accounts for 24% of global malaria deaths and 38% of deaths among children under five, making prevention critical.

The Ripple Effect

This insurance initiative is part of a growing movement in Enugu to protect vulnerable residents. The Mayor of Enugu East recently provided insurance coverage for 5,000 children in need, showing how local leaders are stepping up where national systems fall short.

The state is also piloting new approaches to prevent drug resistance, ensuring malaria treatments remain effective for future generations. Multiple first-line therapies are being tested, and a malaria vaccine is being introduced for children under five through phased rollouts.

Dr. Adaeze Ugwu from the World Health Organization noted that eliminating malaria requires sustained commitment, but Enugu's partnerships between government, nonprofits, and international organizations demonstrate what's possible when communities work together.

When mothers can access care without fear of crippling costs, everyone wins.
