Families moving belongings from informal settlement to new serviced homes in Cape Town's Khayelitsha area

1,000 Families Move from Flood-Prone Cape Town Settlement

😊 Feel Good

Nearly 1,000 families in Cape Town's Khayelitsha area have completed their move from a dangerous flood-prone settlement to safer homes with basic services. After weather delays left some families sleeping outside, city officials finished relocating the final residents this week.

After years of living without running water or toilets in a flood-prone settlement, nearly 1,000 families in Cape Town are starting fresh with access to basic services and safer homes.

The City of Cape Town completed the relocation of residents from Vosho informal settlement in Khayelitsha to serviced sites in Enkanini. The move gives families access to water taps, toilets, and protection from flooding for the first time.

The relocation hit a snag earlier this month when heavy rain forced officials to pause the move on May 4th. About a dozen families had already dismantled their shacks, expecting to move immediately, and were left sleeping outside in the cold with their belongings exposed to the weather.

Frustrated residents blocked the busy Mew Way drive to demand immediate action. By Friday morning, community leaders confirmed that every remaining family had been safely relocated.

Mzwakhe Matshoba, a member of the project steering committee, explained why residents were so eager to leave. Crime was rampant in the old settlement, with thieves breaking into shacks while families were at work.

Resident Sibongiseni Ntuli took a day off work to move after experiencing this firsthand. Just days before the relocation, thieves broke into his shack and stole his cellphone, laptop, and food.

The Ripple Effect

The successful relocation marks just the beginning of positive change for Khayelitsha. The emptied Vosho land is now earmarked for formal housing development, creating opportunities for even more families to access safe, permanent homes.

The project represents a major upgrade for the broader Khayelitsha area. Families who once lived without basic sanitation or security now have the foundation to build safer, more stable lives.

These 1,000 families can finally stop worrying about floods destroying their homes and focus on building their futures.
