10,000 Men to Get Better Prostate Cancer Test for £99

Men in London are getting access to a prostate cancer test that could save thousands of lives each year at a fraction of the usual cost.

Up to 10,000 men aged 44 to 74 will now be able to get the Stockholm3 blood test for just £99, with 2,000 receiving it completely free. The test usually costs hundreds of pounds at private clinics, where it's been available since 2023.

The Stockholm3 test examines multiple markers that indicate aggressive prostate cancer, not just the single PSA marker used in standard NHS testing. Research shows it catches 90% of dangerous prostate cancers compared to just 42% with the traditional PSA test.

The test gained attention after helping diagnose Jeremy Clarkson with an aggressive form of prostate cancer last year. The TV presenter initially had a PSA test before the Stockholm3 confirmed his diagnosis.

Central London Healthcare, a not-for-profit organization, is running the subsidized screening programme starting at Nuffield Health's Barbican Medical Centre. Around 8,000 men will pay the reduced rate while 2,000 who struggle financially will get it free.

The Ripple Effect

Prostate cancer affects more than 55,000 British men each year and kills around 12,300. Better early detection could dramatically reduce those deaths.

The UK National Screening Committee currently doesn't recommend screening all men with PSA tests, saying it could cause more harm than good. But this more accurate test changes the equation by reducing false positives while catching more dangerous cancers.

High-profile figures including Clarkson, Stephen Fry, and former prime ministers David Cameron and Rishi Sunak are pushing Health Secretary Yvette Cooper to introduce national screening. Their letter points out that men without specific genetic markers have no guaranteed testing route beyond hoping their doctor takes concerns seriously.

The Transform trial is currently examining whether wider population testing should become standard practice. Meanwhile, this London programme offers real hope to thousands of men who can now access potentially lifesaving screening.
