102-Year-Old Resistance Hero Still Fighting for Hope

At 102 years old, Jean Lafaurie lives alone in his home east of Paris, managing a packed schedule of school visits where he shares the story that only he can tell. The former French Resistance fighter and Dachau concentration camp survivor refuses to let his experiences fade into history.

Lafaurie's journey began in 1940 when he saw newspaper photos of Nazi troops marching through Paris. He broke down in tears, unable to believe what was happening to his beloved France.

By day, the teenager sold scrap metal in the small town of Souillac. By night, he distributed underground newspapers and political tracts for the Resistance, risking everything to fight back.

Arrested in 1943, Lafaurie spent time in multiple prisons before landing in the Eysses detention center with 1,200 other Resistance members. The prisoners created what became known as the "Eysses Republic," organizing activities and even displaying a portrait of De Gaulle in defiance of their Vichy captors.

In February 1944, the prisoners staged an uprising. After fierce fighting and threats from German artillery, they surrendered, and twelve were executed by firing squad without blindfolds.

More than 1,000 survivors, including Lafaurie, were handed to Nazi authorities and deported to Dachau concentration camp. There, solidarity among prisoners became their lifeline in unimaginable conditions.

Why This Inspires

Lafaurie doesn't just tell his story for history's sake. He travels to schools because he sees troubling echoes of the past in Europe's rising hard-right movements and wants young people to understand what happens when hate goes unchallenged.

His message is simple but powerful: solidarity saved lives in the darkest places, and resistance matters at every age. "I'm still a member of the resistance," he says with a playful smile, adjusting the tie he wears for every visitor.

Today, Lafaurie wears his medals proudly, particularly the Military Medal awarded for major acts in the Resistance. But his most important work continues in classrooms, where he plants seeds of hope and vigilance in generations who will carry his witness forward.

At 102, he proves that the fight for what's right never has an expiration date.
