11-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Becomes Baker for a Day

An 11-year-old brain cancer survivor who found comfort in baking during her toughest days just got to step into a professional kitchen and make her dreams come true.

Dilara Coker was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2024. She endured 17 rounds of cranial radiation and 13 rounds of spinal radiation before going into remission.

During those difficult months, baking became her escape. "I used to make them from scratch when I was sick, that used to be my favorite thing to do," Dilara said.

When Officer Vincent Maio met Dilara at a community event, her courage stuck with him. "I was thinking to myself, wow this kid is so brave," he said.

Maio made it his mission to turn one of Dilara's dreams into reality. He coordinated with Suffolk County Police to surprise her with a day as a baker at La Roma Pastry Shop.

Dilara walked into the bakery not knowing what awaited her. She spent the day learning from professional bakers, working with dough, and creating the treats she loved making at home.

The surprises didn't stop there. Next door at Bellissima Hair Salon, Dilara received an afternoon of beauty treatments and pampering.

Watching Dilara thrive brought her mother Katelyn to tears of joy. "She dealt with a lot and deserves something so wonderful," she said.

Even Officer Maio got emotional seeing the day come together. "I got choked up I'm not going to lie, but I'm so happy she is doing so well."

What started as one officer's desire to honor a brave kid became a community effort to celebrate resilience. For Dilara, it was a chance to do what she loves without the shadow of illness, just pure joy and frosting.
