11-Year-Old Leukemia Survivor Named Wisconsin Hero
Liam Sanborn, who beat leukemia four times before his 12th birthday, will lead Wisconsin's Big Climb fundraiser for blood cancer research. The warrior whose name means strength is turning his toughest moments into hope for others.
An 11-year-old boy who has battled leukemia since he was just 11 months old is now inspiring thousands as the honored hero of Blood Cancer United's Big Climb Wisconsin.
Liam Sanborn has faced his diagnosis multiple times throughout his childhood. His mother Ashley knew what she was doing when she named him Liam, which means warrior.
"I think I named him appropriately," Ashley said. "I think that I was dealt a hand that was quite difficult, but you're not dealt a hand you can't handle."
The young fighter received a bone marrow transplant in 2021, a major milestone in his treatment journey. But the road hasn't ended there.
Liam now lives with graft-versus-host disease, a condition that affects his skin and will follow him for life. His family regularly travels to Chicago for infusions and IV treatments to manage his ongoing medical needs.

Despite everything, Liam keeps his spirit bright. "I try to act all happy and stuff and try to act like I have a good life," Liam told NFL Hall of Famer Joe Thomas, who invited the family to his Muscoda ranch.
Thomas, a former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman, is partnering with Blood Cancer United for the fundraiser. "What a great kid, the kid just has a zest for life," Thomas said after meeting Liam.
The Ripple Effect
Liam's story is now fueling real change in blood cancer research. The Big Climb challenge, happening at Camp Randall Stadium in May, will raise funds to help scientists find better treatments for kids facing similar battles.
Every stair climbed represents the daily challenges young cancer patients overcome. Every dollar raised brings researchers closer to breakthroughs that could spare future families from the hospital stays, infusions, and uncertainty the Sanborns have faced.
"He is doing great at keeping me on my toes and inspiring me to keep doing more," Ashley said. "I think that he's my blessing."
Liam's journey from patient to hero shows how one child's courage can light the way for countless others fighting their own battles.
