115-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Found 473 Meters Underground

Looking for copper, a mining crew in Inner Mongolia hit prehistoric jackpot instead: a dinosaur tail that had been buried underground for 115 million years.

The fossil emerged from a drill core pulled up from 473 meters below the surface in the Yin'gen-Ejinaqi Basin. Workers at Geological Party No. 208 were conducting a routine mineral exploration project near Guaizihu when they discovered bone fragments mixed in with the rock samples.

Unlike typical fossil discoveries that happen when paleontologists carefully excavate exposed bones, this ancient creature came back to the surface purely by accident. The drilling equipment punched straight through layers of Early Cretaceous rock and brought up pieces of dinosaur tail that no one knew existed there.

Researchers identified the fossil as an ornithischian, the "bird-hipped" group that includes well-known dinosaurs like Triceratops and Stegosaurus. The preserved tail includes four vertebral sections, six neural arches, and even ossified tendons that once helped the animal move.

The bones closely resemble Psittacosaurus, a small plant-eating dinosaur common across ancient East Asia. However, scientists can't confirm the exact species because only tail fragments survived, so they're playing it safe with the classification.

Evidence suggests the dinosaur was young when it died. Several vertebral elements hadn't fused together yet, indicating the animal hadn't reached full skeletal maturity.

The fossil now holds the record as the westernmost dinosaur ever found in the Bayan Gobi Formation. That might not sound exciting, but it extends the known geographic range of Early Cretaceous dinosaurs in this region and suggests many more fossils could be hiding in unexpected places.
