1,200 Kids Join NC Library's Summer Reading Program

This summer, the Caldwell County Public Library system turned into a buzzing hub of young readers eager to discover their next favorite book.

Between June and July, 1,199 children registered for the Summer Reading Program across the library's Lenoir, Hudson, and Southern branches. More than half of those kids, 639 in total, completed their reading logs and earned prizes for their efforts.

The numbers tell an even bigger story. From June through August, over 7,800 people participated in 250 events and activities designed for children and their families. These weren't just quiet reading hours but celebrations of literacy that brought entire communities together.

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, the system distributed more than 1,350 books and 1,000 prizes to young readers throughout the summer. Local businesses stepped up too, with community sponsors providing over 4,000 additional prizes to keep kids motivated on their reading journey.

Children who finished their reading by July 31 were entered into a grand prize drawing featuring goodies from nearly 30 local businesses. Partners included favorites like Chick-fil-A, Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, and the Hickory Crawdads, showing how the entire community rallied behind childhood literacy.

The Ripple Effect

The impact of getting kids excited about reading extends far beyond summer vacation. Research shows that children who participate in summer reading programs maintain their literacy skills and return to school more prepared than peers who don't read during break.

Caldwell County's program created 327 children who completed the entire challenge, building reading habits that could last a lifetime. Each book they opened was a door to new worlds, ideas, and possibilities.

The library isn't stopping with summer either. Kids can continue earning free books through programs like 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and special reading challenges during spring and winter breaks, ensuring the momentum keeps building year-round.

Library staff said they're incredibly proud of every child who participated, whether they read one book or twenty. In a world of screens and distractions, these young readers chose pages and stories, proving that the magic of books is far from fading.
