126 Students Graduate Despite Typhoon and Budget Cuts

One hundred twenty-six high school seniors crossed the stage on June 5 in Saipan, marking the end of a journey that tested their resilience at every turn.

The Class of 2026 at Saipan Southern High School faced challenges most students never encounter. They started high school recovering from the pandemic, navigated budget-driven austerity schedules that changed their school days, and weathered Super Typhoon Sinlaku during their final year.

Valedictorian Aubrey June Tabenas reminded her classmates of a simple childhood story during her speech. She compared their class to the hungry caterpillar, always wanting more knowledge, success, and growth.

"Yet, here we all are," Tabenas told the crowd of family, educators, and community leaders gathered on campus. "We stand here as a true testament to the significance of resilience and perseverance."

Salutatorian Awen Zhang added his own reflection on their unexpected high school experience. "There was no such thing as Austerity Monday," he said, referencing the budget cuts that shortened their school weeks. "But here we are, standing stronger than Sinlaku ever was."

The ceremony recognized more than academic achievement. Selina Torente Beltran completed 505 hours of community service and received the Mayor's Service Award. Jolash Neil Saluta logged 305 service hours and earned the Principal's Award.

Why This Inspires

This graduating class proves that obstacles don't define outcomes. When schedules changed and resources shrank, these students adapted. When a super typhoon disrupted their senior year, they persisted. Their success shows what's possible when young people refuse to let circumstances write their story.

The top 10 graduates are now heading to colleges, military service, and the workforce. They carry lessons that can't be taught in textbooks about pushing forward when the path gets difficult.

Tabenas left her classmates with final advice as they prepare for their next chapters. "Stay hungry through it all," she said. "Don't be afraid of change. Embrace it and grow into your own beautiful butterfly."

These 126 graduates didn't just earn diplomas—they earned proof that determination outlasts any storm.
