High school students raking leaves and doing yard work for elderly homeowners in Barnesville

130 Volunteers Help 80 Seniors in Barnesville Day of Caring

High schoolers and neighbors teamed up to rake yards, clean windows, and trim shrubs for 80 seniors who couldn't do it themselves. The Minnesota town's fourth annual Day of Caring brought out its biggest crowd yet.

When Pam Aakre looked out her freshly cleaned windows at her newly mowed lawn, she felt overwhelmed by gratitude for the teenagers who made it happen.

More than 130 volunteers flooded the streets of Barnesville, Minnesota on May 6 for the town's fourth annual Day of Caring. Over 100 high school students joined 30 adult volunteers to help 80 seniors with yard work and home maintenance they couldn't manage alone.

The Barnesville Area Community Fund organized the event to flip the usual script. While seniors spend the school year supporting students at sports games, concerts, and academic competitions, this was the kids' chance to give back.

"These are the people that really support us in everything we do, so it just feels really good to give back and help them out," said Cameron Halverson, a Barnesville High School student. For seniors like Aakre, having clean windows and a trimmed yard meant their houses felt like homes again.

The Ripple Effect

This year's turnout was the biggest the event has ever seen. Aaron Schindler, representing the Barnesville Area Community Fund, sees it as communities taking care of their own.

The Fund has been doing exactly that since 1989. Over 37 years, they've given back more than two million dollars through grants, scholarships, business loans, and events like the Day of Caring.

What started as a simple community service day has grown into an annual tradition that brings generations together. Students learn the value of service while seniors get the help they need and the company they deserve.

Organizers are already planning to make next year's event even bigger, proving that small towns know how to show up for each other.
