13,000 Donors Raise £3.6M for Hampshire Air Ambulance Move

A community of 13,000 supporters just made emergency care faster for millions of people across southern England by raising £3.6 million for their local air ambulance.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance reached its fundraising goal for Operation Airbase, the ambitious campaign to relocate from its longtime home at Thruxton airfield to a new purpose-built facility near Southampton Airport. The move marks the end of 19 years of operations from a base that started as a small portacabin in 2007.

The new location changes everything for response times. Doctors, pilots and paramedics can now reach almost every patient within 10 minutes of takeoff, delivering critical specialist care when seconds matter most.

Local businesses, community groups, trusts, foundations and individual fundraisers all pitched in after the appeal launched in September 2024. Supporters took on challenges ranging from the grueling Three Peaks Challenge to community favorites like Dash in the Dark and the Runway Run.

The final flight departed from Thruxton on May 22nd. Just days later, the new airbase was already showing its potential.

During the first weekend operating from Southampton, crews responded to 20 emergencies across the south. That's nearly three times the average of seven missions per day, demonstrating how the improved location allows the team to help more people in crisis.

The Ripple Effect

Every penny of the £3.6 million came directly from the community. That means thousands of local residents, businesses and groups chose to invest in a system that might one day save their own life or the life of someone they love.

The faster response times don't just benefit Hampshire residents. The service covers the Isle of Wight too, and the central location means better access across the entire region.

The charity grew from humble beginnings into one of the region's leading pre-hospital emergency medicine services, responding to thousands of emergencies each year. Now, with a state-of-the-art facility and a more strategic location, that life-saving work can reach even more people even faster.

Thirteen thousand individual acts of generosity just built something that will protect an entire region for decades to come.
