133 Chihuahuas Rescued in Tennessee, Now Healing

More than 130 dogs are safe tonight after rescuers spent a week carefully evacuating chihuahuas from a Rutherford County, Tennessee home where an elderly couple had become overwhelmed by animals breeding unchecked for years.

Animal Rescue Corps launched "Operation Little Dogs, Big Hearts" between May 9 and May 14, ultimately saving 133 chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes ranging from puppies to senior dogs. The team also rescued two mother cats, five kittens hiding beneath a shed, and one larger dog confined outdoors.

The elderly couple caring for the animals faced serious health challenges themselves and could no longer manage the growing population. When local animal control ordered the family to move the dogs outside or face fines due to limited shelter space, the situation became dangerous.

Frightened dogs crammed into temporary outdoor pens began fighting, causing severe injuries. Rescue teams prioritized the most critically wounded animals first, rushing them to emergency veterinary care while coordinating with authorities to keep the remaining dogs indoors until a full evacuation could happen.

Veterinary teams treating the rescued animals documented fight wounds, respiratory distress, congestive heart failure, severe dental disease, tumors, eye ulcers, and infections. Many dogs had never received grooming, socialization, or basic medical care. Tragically, rescuers found at least one deceased dog on the property.

The Bright Side

Every single rescued animal is now receiving comprehensive medical treatment, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, and behavioral rehabilitation. The chihuahuas, many of whom knew only chaos and overcrowding, are learning what safety feels like for the first time.

Once they're medically cleared and emotionally ready, all 133 dogs will enter adoption programs designed to match them with loving permanent homes. The cats and kittens are following the same pathway to recovery and new beginnings.

This rescue shows what's possible when animal welfare organizations, local authorities, and veterinary teams work together to solve complex hoarding cases with compassion rather than punishment. These little dogs finally have their big hearts' desire: a real chance at happiness.
