14-Year-Old Scores 175 in U-19 World Cup Final

A teenager who barely slept the night before just played the game of his life on cricket's biggest youth stage.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, just 14 years old, smashed an incredible 175 runs off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final against England in Harare on Friday. His performance led India to a dominant victory and their record sixth youth world championship.

The pressure nearly overwhelmed him the night before. "I did not sleep the whole night and just got an hour or two of sleep," Sooryavanshi admitted after the match. "We can say that we will play it as a normal game but there was pressure on us."

That pressure was uniquely intense for Indian players. Unlike cricketers from other countries who can compete in multiple Under-19 World Cups, Indian age restrictions mean most players get just one shot at this tournament.

When game time arrived, Sooryavanshi transformed his nerves into pure dominance. His captain Ayush Mhatre, who also scored a half-century, tried to calm him down as he approached his century. "Ayush was telling me to take singles and play sensibly," Sooryavanshi said.

But the young star had different plans. "I knew that as long as I was at the crease, if I dominated, we could bat England out of the game," he explained. His aggressive approach worked perfectly as India posted 411 runs, essentially ending England's hopes in the first innings.

The teenager's tournament performance earned him both Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament honors. After a slow start, he caught fire when it mattered most, including a blazing 68 off 33 balls in the semifinal against Afghanistan.
