14-Year-Old Swimmer Sets Pool Record in Varsity Debut
High school freshman Sydney Godfrey just set a pool record in her first varsity season, crediting her secret weapon: staying relaxed and having fun. The young athlete's joy-first approach is making waves in Michigan swimming.
Sometimes the best way to achieve greatness is to stop trying so hard and just enjoy the moment.
Sydney Godfrey proved that last week when the Williamston High School freshman won the 500 freestyle at Charlotte, breaking the pool record with a time of 5:20.53. Her secret? She had a teammate snap a photo of her jokingly asking AI how to swim the race, helping her relax before diving in.
"I perform way better when I don't have pressure," Godfrey explained. "When I don't think about something or I have fun or I joke with my friends next to me, I swim faster."
The strategy is clearly working. Her record-setting time ranked as the fastest in the Capital Area Activities Conference this season and third in the state among all Division 3 swimmers.
Godfrey has become a standout across multiple events in her debut varsity season. She swims on three relay teams that currently hold the fastest times in Greater Lansing this fall, and she ranks first or second in nearly every individual event in her area.

Her success builds on an impressive summer where she swept three backstroke events at a state club meet. That momentum caught the attention of Williamston coach Madi Stewart, who has been amazed by her young swimmer's hunger to improve.
"She is always asking for more," Stewart said. "We were doing a drill based set in practice and she was like I just want to swim more yards, I want to get stronger. She's always hungry for more."
Why This Inspires
Godfrey's approach challenges the pressure-heavy culture often found in competitive youth sports. While many young athletes crack under expectations, this 14-year-old reminds us that passion and playfulness can coexist with excellence. Her ability to balance ambition with joy shows maturity beyond her years.
Now Godfrey has her sights set on breaking individual varsity records, particularly the 100 backstroke. She's also eyeing all-state recognition by season's end, though she admits Division 3 competition is fierce.
But if her first varsity season proves anything, it's that when you stop overthinking and start enjoying the journey, incredible things become possible.
