1,500 Beagles Rescued from Research Facility Find Homes

When the first beagles stepped out of the Wisconsin research facility where they'd spent their entire lives, something remarkable happened within just an hour. They crawled into laps, sought out human touch, and showed the world why this breed is known for being so trusting.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy just completed a deal to purchase all 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. The rescue operation began Friday, with 300 dogs transported to a staging area where they're receiving vaccinations, microchips, and spay or neuter procedures before heading to their forever homes.

"They started within an hour or so coming up to us, wanting attention," said Lauree Simmons, president and founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. "Every single one of them are super sweet. I just know they know they're safe."

The response from potential adopters has been overwhelming. Big Dog Ranch Rescue alone has received over 700 adoption applications for the 1,000 dogs they're rehoming, while the Center for a Humane Economy will place the remaining 500.

Simmons explained that beagles are commonly used in research facilities precisely because of their gentle, forgiving nature and smaller size. Their calm temperament, which makes them wonderful family pets, unfortunately made them targets for laboratory testing. Now, these same qualities are helping them adjust quickly to human affection and home life.

The rescue organizations are taking their time to ensure successful placements. Staff members are screening potential families, preparing the dogs for house training, and coordinating transport to partner shelters across the country. Younger dogs are expected to adapt faster, while older beagles may need more patience as they learn what it means to be loved.
