176 Students Win Summer Research With Top Scientists
A new fellowship program just gave 176 college students from across America the chance to work alongside Nobel Prize-winning scientists for nine weeks. The inaugural Cech Fellows will conduct real research at 131 top labs this summer.
One summer in the right lab can change a student's entire career path, and 176 undergraduates are about to find out firsthand.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute just selected its first class of Cech Fellows, pairing college students from 109 schools across 36 states with some of the nation's leading scientists. For nine weeks this summer, these students will conduct actual research in 131 laboratories, contributing to real scientific discoveries in biology and medicine.
The program honors Nobel laureate Thomas Cech, whose groundbreaking discovery that RNA can function as a biological catalyst reshaped molecular biology. During his time leading HHMI, Cech championed getting students into research environments early, believing it's one of the most powerful ways to nurture future scientists.
"By asking real questions alongside scientists at the top of their fields, this year's Cech Fellows will have the opportunity to see what a life in science actually looks like," said Leslie Vosshall, HHMI's Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer.
The students will work at universities, research institutions, and HHMI's Janelia Research Campus in Virginia. At the end of their nine weeks, all 176 Fellows will gather at Janelia to share their findings and connect with each other, building a network that could last throughout their careers.

Summer research experiences often mark the moment when students discover their true passion for science. This program gives them something even more valuable: direct access to mentors doing groundbreaking work and the chance to see themselves as scientists.
Why This Inspires
Opening doors to scientific careers early creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond one summer. When students from diverse backgrounds and institutions get hands-on experience with cutting-edge research, they gain confidence and skills that textbooks alone can't provide. They also build relationships with mentors who can guide them through graduate school applications, career decisions, and research challenges for years to come.
The program represents a major investment in the next generation of researchers. These 176 students will return to their campuses with stories, skills, and inspiration to share with classmates who might never have considered research careers.
"I've always believed that getting students into real research environments early is one of the most powerful things we can do for them and for science," Cech said. He added that he's honored the program carries his name and looks forward to seeing what these Fellows achieve.
The Cech Fellowship joins other HHMI programs supporting scientists at every career stage, from PhD students to early career faculty, all designed to advance discovery and build a more inclusive scientific community.
One summer can spark a lifetime of discovery.
