180 New Jersey Grads Celebrate Safe at All-Night Bash

When 180 Governor Livingston High School graduates piled onto five buses headed to Funplex amusement park, they weren't just celebrating their big achievement. They were participating in a community effort that's kept graduating seniors safe for years.

Project Graduation transformed what could have been a risky night into five hours of pure fun at the East Hanover, New Jersey venue. From 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., the Class of 2026 had the run of Splashplex water slides, laser tag, bowling, bumper cars, go-karts, and video games.

Fifteen volunteers made it happen, starting with registration and bag checks at the school. Parent chaperones rode along on the buses, ensuring everyone got there and back safely.

Local emergency medical technicians from Mountainside and Berkeley Heights stayed on site all night, ready for any situation. Police officers from both departments also volunteered their time to keep watch over the celebration.

Why This Inspires

Project Graduation tackles a real problem: the dangerous choices some teens make on graduation night. Instead of lecturing or restricting, this program offers something better: an alternative so fun that students want to participate.

The program runs on community power. Berkeley Heights Dunkin' Donuts donated 18 dozen donuts. Local businesses chipped in prizes like beach towels and gift cards that were raffled throughout the night.

Parent volunteers organize multiple events all year long, from senior breakfast to prom fashion shows. The all-night party is their biggest effort, requiring coordination with schools, businesses, bus companies, and public safety officials.

The model works because everyone invests in it. Parents of younger students are already being recruited to help plan future years, ensuring the tradition continues.

When 180 teenagers arrive home safely at 2 a.m. with happy memories instead of regrets, an entire community can rest a little easier.
