187 Companies Pledge to Shield Families from AI Energy Costs

Families worried about rising utility bills just got a major commitment from the companies building America's AI future.

In a White House ceremony Thursday, 187 companies including tech giants and utilities signed a pledge promising to shield consumers from higher electricity costs as data centers expand across the country. Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and major utilities like Duke Energy and NextEra Energy are among the signatories.

The pledge addresses a growing concern. Data centers require massive amounts of electricity to power artificial intelligence, and families have been worried about competing with tech companies for power. Some estimates suggest monthly utility bills could rise 15% to 40% by 2030 without protective measures.

The companies committed to generating their own power rather than drawing from existing grids that serve homes and businesses. This means new power plants and infrastructure built specifically for data centers, not shared with residential customers.

Twenty three governors from both parties also signed the agreement, signaling bipartisan support for protecting ratepayers. Florida already passed a law preventing utilities from passing data center costs to residential customers, and dozens of state legislatures have taken similar action.

The pledge comes as communities nationwide are grappling with data center development. While these facilities generate tax revenue for school districts, residents worry about environmental impacts and rising costs for electricity, water, and land.
