19-Year-Old Breaks UK Parkrun Record on New Year's Day

A 19-year-old university student just shattered the UK female Parkrun record without even knowing the record existed.

Innes Fitzgerald from east Devon crossed the finish line at Exmouth Parkrun in 15 minutes 27 seconds on New Year's Day. The sports and exercise science student at the University of Exeter only runs one or two Parkruns each year, making her record-breaking performance even more remarkable.

"When the event began, my competitive nature kicked in," Fitzgerald said. She had no idea she was chasing history until after she finished.

The conditions played perfectly in her favor that morning. Cool temperatures, no wind, and a flat course created ideal racing weather for the 5km route.

Now that she knows about the world record, Fitzgerald has a new goal in mind. "The world record will be something to look for next time," she said with characteristic determination.

Why This Inspires

Fitzgerald's story shows what happens when talent meets opportunity on an ordinary morning. She balances the demanding schedule of training and university studies, finding what she calls a "good routine" since moving to Exeter.

Her success also highlights the beauty of Parkrun events, where casual joggers and elite athletes share the same starting line. These free, timed 5km events happen across the UK every Saturday morning, welcoming everyone from first-time walkers to record-breaking runners.

The teenager who grew up near Seaton has big dreams ahead. She's training for races in mid-February and hopes to qualify for both the European Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games this summer.

Competing on home soil in Birmingham and Glasgow would make those achievements extra special. "Hopefully, all going well, we will be in a good place next summer," Fitzgerald said.

For someone who already completed a European Under-20 double, the future looks incredibly bright for this Devon athlete who turned a casual New Year's Day run into UK history.
